According to a recent twitter message by Chris Cornell and this Billboard article, 90's Seattle rock band Soundgarden are reuniting for some concerts in 2010. This means Matt Cameron, who is the current drummer for Pearl Jam and past drummer for Soundgarden will have a busy 2010. Pearl Jam is already scheduled to perform a few shows in May, June and July.
I've never been a huge Soundgarden fan, but I can appreciate the important role they played in the Seattle music scene of the 1990's. I did see lead singer Chris Cornell during his solo tour and was blown away by his talent.
Today I'm sharing one of Soundgarden's hits with you as well as a story!
Soundgarden - Spoonman
Spoonman is a real Seattle performer named Artis, yes the song is about him and yes that's him playing the spoons in the video. He plays the spoons as I've never seen them played before. He is amazing. Not so much now, but in the past he played regularly at street festivals and as a busker at the Pike Place Market.
In 2008 we had a big 16th birthday party for Star Wars Son and his best friend C... Their birthdays are only a couple weeks apart. C's parent, Sharon and Michael are artists who make their living making and selling stained glass kaleidoscopes at the Pike Place Market and know Artis the Spoonman.
Artis donated a performance to a charity auction being held at the Pike Place Market. Sharon got word of it ahead of time and we decided it would be great if we could win the bidding for the performance for SWS and C's birthday party. We came up with a dollar limit and Sharon started bidding. We were the lucky winners and Artis the Spoonman performed at SWS and C's 16th birthday party!
He was amazing! He plays the spoons with his whole body. Between "songs" he talked to the kids about all kinds of stuff, but the main message was to stay away from drinking and drugs. They were all enthralled with him and later some of them told me they could have listened to him play and tell stories all night.
I feel so fortunate to have had him perform at the kids party, it really made it extra special!
Here is a performance Spoonman did on Night Music in 2006... This is a must watch!
Another young singer I'm enjoying this holiday season is Michael Buble. He is definitely a throw back to the crooners of the 1950's. I was lucky enough to win his latest CD Crazy Love from a contest at Jenn's blog Juggling Life.
It came about a week ago and even though it's not Christmas music I have listened to it a couple times. Normally this is not the type of music I like or listen too, except when scrapbooking, but I have been enjoying it in my non-scrapbooking time! His style takes me back to my childhood when listening to my mom play the music of her crooners on the record player.
This is his performance from Rockefeller Center 2009. Enjoy!

Last week I posted about some of the Christmas music I listened to growing up. This week it's all about the new younger artists I'm listening to this holiday season. At the top of my list is Josh Groban... Oh. My. Gawd. can that man sing! Here he is singing Oh Holy Night from Rockefeller Center 2002. Enjoy!
Growing up Christmas music was very big at my house. We started listening to my mom's collection soon after Thanksgiving. We listened to Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Wayne Newton, The Chipmunks, the list goes on. The one artist that spoke Christmas to me more than any other was Andy Williams! I still listen to a lot of Christmas music. I have more Christmas albums than I care to admit, but it's not truly the holiday season until I hear Andy.
My mom started taking me to concerts when I was around 8 years old. My very first concert was David Cassidy. She took me to see John Denver so many times I lost count. It was our
thing, to go see him every time he was in town. The last time he
played in Seattle she couldn't go, she was visiting my brother in
Alaska, so Handy Man went with me. He wasn't a fan, but he admitted it
was a great show. Shortly after that show John Denver died and I was
devastated. A mom and daughter tradition died when he did. Dancing
Daughter would have enjoyed his shows too.
This clip really shows his vocal ability. I'm really slowing it down this week, I hope you enjoy!
Type Pad now offers very easy ways to post videos and music files. I've posted a few youtube videos, but for this Sing-A-Long Saturday I wanted to post a music file from my personal collection. Seems simple enough!
If the music file is an mp3 format it loads the song into a handy little player. If the music file is in any other format it makes the song available for download. I have a Mac, this means most of my music files are not mp3's. I just want you all to be able to listen to the music, not download it. Gah!
My plan was to tell a story about how in high school (1981) I had a 1966 Dodge Dart. It looked kind of like this one, only mine was a metallic brownish color.
It sported only an AM Radio. No FM, no tape deck, no 8-track! I would tape songs to listen to in the car on a portable battery operated cassette player. The music we seemed to listen to most of all was the B-52's. I wanted to share one of those songs with you today, but I don't have any of their songs in mp3 format.
So for today I share yet another youtube video. This is the B52's performing Rock Lobster in the early days! Enjoy!
