Sing-A-Long Saturday

In mid-July my friends from MA, ID and OR came to visit me... Actually they mostly came to town to see the Eddie Vedder solo concert in Seattle at Beneroya Hall.  The show was really incredible.  One of the best shows I've been to.  Between My Morning Jacket in June and Eddie Vedder in July I saw some incredible music being played this summer and I still have Pearl Jam in WI coming up in September!

Opening for Eddie was Glen Hansard from the bands The Frames and Swell Season.  The only song I knew from him was Falling Slowly (a Swell Season song) which won an Academy Award in 2007.  He completely blew me away and I've since added his music to my playlist!

During Eddie's set Glen came out and sang a couple songs with him.  At one point Eddie and Glen stepped away from the microphones and sang Sleepless Nights from Eddie's Ukeulele Songs album.  Here is that performance:

 

Truly an incredible goosebump moment while sitting in the crowd!

I'll be seeing this guy on Friday July 15 and I can't wait!  His new album called Ukulele Songs came out a few weeks ago and I highly recommend that you all go buy it!

Sunday night Handy Man and I went to see My Morning Jacket at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle.  Next to Pearl Jam and seeing Bruce Springsteen in 1988 (or was it 87?) this was the best concert I've been to!

I'm still loving this season of American Idol.  The judges are cool and the talent is impressive.  The musical diversity of the contestants is keeping the show especially interesting.

I also love Casey.  I have not been a Haley fan. At. All.  However this performance with Casey completely changed my mind.  She should be a jazz singer!

 

It wouldn't be me if I also didn't love the rocker James.

Sometimes Tuesdays Are Good Days

Today has been great!

When I got dressed the morning I put on a pair of pants I haven't worn for a while and I found two $5 bills in the pocket!

Dancing Daughter was ready to go on time this morning so I wasn't late for work.

At work I happily helped a new employee use Excel.  I love Excel.  Excel is my office boyfriend.  Anytime I can share the Excel love I'm happy.  Yes, I know I'm weird.

Jean Auel's latest book, The Land of Painted Caves, came out today. After work I went to my local, small, new and used bookstore where I pre-ordered the book a few weeks ago.  I haven't decided if I'm taking it on vacation.  It's pretty large!

On the way to the bookstore I noticed a wine store is going in near the Trader Joe's in my neighborhood.  It's not open yet and there is no sign other than "coming soon" in the window.  It's called Decanter Wines.  I can't wait to check it out when it opens!

In the depths of my closet live my summer clothes, mostly consisting of short sleeves and capri pants.  I dug them out and was happy to find that everything from last summer still fits!  Makes packing for San Diego that much easier.

By some manner of pure luck (and Star Wars Son's amazing computer skills) I was able to snag two tickets to Eddie Vedder's upcoming solo tour!  They went on pre-sale today through the fan club.  He will be promoting his new album called Ukulele Songs, that will be coming out soon with a live concert film called Water On The Road.  Just like it sounds it's a whole album of songs played on the Ukulele.  He will be ending the short one month tour in Seattle, at Benaroya Hall on July 15.  To say I'm excited would be an understatement!  Here is a mightly fine picture of Eddie with his Uke!

I've spent the last hour watching Beatles videos on youtube.  I didn't want to stop, except I have to get dressed, eat some breakfast and run some errands.  

Here are the Beatles performing I've Got a Feeling from a rooftop, with some observations from passersby.

 

This is a different take on the same song.  This 1992 live cover was performed by Pearl Jam in Den Haag, Netherlands.  Eddie changes up the lyrics, which he's known for doing.  They add in some interesting song tags of their own (if you're a hard core fan you can hear some Dirty Frank) and he mentions missing Andy, a reference to the deceased Mother Love Bone singer.  He throws in lyrics from many different non Pearl Jam songs.  All in all it's quite a treasure for any Pearl Jam fan. I think John Lennon would have been proud!

Have you seen Eat, Pray, Love?  If you have did you hear the song while the end credits were running?  It's Eddie Vedder singing Better Days, a song he wrote for the movie.

 

There is a wedding scene in the movie where they used a Pearl Jam song called Long Road.  It's a version that Eddie Vedder and Jeff Ament did with Rahat Fahet Ali Kahn.  It's a short little snippet in the movie, the video version below is much longer, but definitely worth the time to listen.

I'm just going to come out and say it.  I'm in love with the new American Idol.  There I said it, it's out there for all the world to read.  This is shocking to me because without Simon Cowell I was not expecting American Idol to be good this season. At. All.  I'm so glad I was wrong.

While I didn't always like Simon's delivery when he criticized a bad performance I almost always agreed with his assessment.  It was hard for me to imagine Idol without him.  The new judges, however, are so refreshing they are bringing new life to the show.

I can't decide who I like more Jennifer Lopez or Steven Tyler.

Jennifer Lopez is so sweet and gorgeous.  I'm most definitely a healthy straight woman, but I could look at her all night.  At first I thought she might be too easy on the contestants with all her sweetness, thankfully that is not the case.  She's truthful without being mean.  During the Hollywood week solos she frequently sang along with the contestants, I loved that!  BONUS:  She can successfully (and without slurring) string 3 or more sentences together that make sense.

Steven Tyler is amazing.  With all the stories about the abusive life he's led he looks pretty damn good for a 62 year old!  He's flirtatious, passionate and speaks his mind but is gentle when the news is not good.  He's game for anything and it's so obvious he's enjoying himself that you can't help but catch enthusiasm from him.  BONUS: No out and out rudeness or plain white t-shirts.
