The Mothering Meme

I was tagged to do this Meme on Mothering by Jenn over at Juggling Life.  If you haven't checked out her blog head on over.  She is a great writer, who I identify with much of the time.

Most of you know about our regular trips to Anderson Island.  What most of you don't know is that when our kids were young, we were the only ones with young kids.  So when we would go to the island we'd go a day early get the tent set up and the kids acclimated before everyone else got there.  On one such trip Handy Man wasn't feeling well and wasn't ready to go in the morning when we were.  He ended up making plans to come down later in the evening with our friends in their boat.  That meant I was on my own with the kids to set up camp.  I looked at it as an adventure right up to the point when I was putting the tent up and Dancing Daughter, who was 2 1/2 decided it would be fun to grab one of the metal stakes and run away.

I was so angry, I yelled, she ran faster while laughing I might add.  I chased after her, while yelling louder, she ran in curvy circles so it would be harder for me to catch her.  But catch her I did and I gave her 3 hard swats on the bottom.  She was shocked, I was shocked.  She dropped the stake and started screaming bloody murder.  That was the first and only time I ever hit either one of my kids.  It was a knee jerk reaction to get her attention about how dangerous running with a metal stake was.  I'm not sure she got the message or not.  I was a wreck by the time Handy Man showed up all fresh and rested.  I'm pretty sure I was mean to him too!

To remind yourself that you ARE a good mom, list SEVEN things you love about your kids, you love doing with your kids, or that your kids love about you. These are the things to remind yourself of EVERY DAY that you rock!

Both of my kids have very strong feelings about not smoking, drinking or doing drugs.  My son has been exposed many times and declines to partake.  He has surrounded himself with 2 or 3 close friends who feel the same way.  I hope when Dancing Daughter is exposed she has the same convictions as her brother.

My kids have strong spiritual belief systems.  They are completely different beliefs but each is tolerant of the other.

Spending time with my kids is very important to me.  I love sitting around the dining room table talking to my kids and their friends.  Keeping it casual really makes for some interesting (and informative) conversations.

My daughter is a Mama's girl and as much as it drives me crazy at times, I love it.  I hope we continue to be close as she keeps growing and maturing.

I love my son's confidence and determination.

Dancing Daughter said...  I can't pick just one thing!!  But if I have to... Even though I'm a brat you love me anyway! :)

Star Wars Son said... The one thing I've always love about you more than anything is your ability to stay calm in hectic situations.  (He obviously doesn't remember the above situation with DD at Anderson Island!)

I was named for the Tammy character portrayed by Debbie Reynolds.  It was either Tammy or Gidget.  I'm glad my mama picked Tammy.

3.  What should you be doing?  Working

A term to describe the tedious and boring indentured servitude that most people are forced to endure to get money. Generally, not a pleasant experience.

 

I like my job I just don't anything to do at the moment!

 

4.  Favorite color?  My absolute favorite color is the reddish/pinkish/orangish/purplish color of the sky at sunrise or sunset.  So I'm going with Sunrise and Sunset as colors...

 

Sunrise:

Sunset: 

In corporate doublespeak, sunsetting something means stopping to do something, eg. a project or different aspects of the job.

We need to sunset that initiative we started last year.
I can't believe they want to sunset the dental benefit!

The Emerald City, a gem to the Pac. Northwest. Home to the Space-needle, Bank of America tower, Key West Arena, Safeco Field, and Seahawks stadium, it is truly an up-and-coming city.

It also happens to be a haven to people with -all- interests and styles of life, as shown by another definition to Seattle.

And ohh yeah, we're smart, too.

Firsts

I read this at Judy's blog CoffeeJitters and thought it would be fun to do.

1.  Who was your FIRST prom date?  It was none other than Handy Man.  He didn't have a girlfriend and I didn't have a boyfriend.  We figured since we were already friends and he would be going into the Navy after graduation it was smart for him not to get into a long term relationship.  Famous. Last. Words.

2.  Do you still talk to your FIRST love?  No, and unfortunately he died a couple years ago.  Can you believe I was 13 the first time I was convinced I was "in love"?  DD is 14 and still hasn't had a boyfriend yet!

3.  What was your FIRST alcoholic drink?  Champagne at my parents 15 wedding anniversary... Yes I was very young.

4.  What was your FIRST job?  Does babysitting count?!  My first official job where I got a paycheck was working as a counselor at a summer day camp.  I'm pretty sure I was not 16 yet.

5.  What was your FIRST car?  A metallic brownish 1966 Dodge Dart.  The Party Dart is what we called it.

6. Who was the FIRST person to text you today?  Surprisingly I haven't received a text today.

7. Who is the FIRST person you thought of this morning?  Is the cat a person?!  Who can not think about her when she's yeowing about wanting food!

8.  Who was your FIRST grade teacher?  Mrs. Fulton and I LOVED her.  Once a month she would take 2 star students to her house for an overnight.  She lived on Lake Union in downtown Seattle.  She had a huge cat and played Peter, Paul and Mary on the record player.  To this day when I hear Leavin' On A Jet Plane I think of her.

9. Where did you go on your FIRST ride on an airplane?  I went to San Diego to see Handy Man graduate from Navy boot camp.  I was 18 and scared to death!

10.  Who was your FIRST best friend and do you still talk?  Oh my...  I would say Kristen.  She was my best friend from kindergarten until 6th grade.  After that we went to different schools.  No I do not talk to her these days.

11. Where was your FIRST sleep over?  At Tracy Phelps house and one of those floor to ceiling lamps fell on my head.  I ended up going home around 1:00 am.  So I guess technically it wasn't a sleep over.

12. Who was the FIRST person you talked to today?  My son... I have to wake him up.

13.  Whose wedding were you in the FIRST time?  I've only been in one wedding and I was 12.  It was my Uncle Bob's wedding.

14. What was the FIRST thing you did this morning?  I wondered what day it was then I turned on the bedside lamp.

15. What was the FIRST concert you ever went to?  David Cassidy!!!  Hubba-hubba!

16.  FIRST tattoo?  None.  I'm still trying to decide on a design...

17.  FIRST piercing?  Ears, age 11.

18.  FIRST foreign country you visited?  The one and only foreign country I've ever visited is Canada.

19.  FIRST movie you remember seeing?  The first movie I remember seeing in the theater was The Sound of Music.  I was very young.  I don't remember much of the movie, but I do remember throwing up on the way home.  This doesn't seem like such a big deal, except we were taking the bus home.  And by we I mean my mom, my younger brother, the stroller and a big shopping bag full of stuff.  It's in that big shopping bag that I threw up into.  Good times!

20.  When was your FIRST detention?  I never technically got detention.  But my best friend, Kristen, and I got caught playing out in the rain after the rainy day recess bell rang.  We claimed we didn't hear the bell, but we knew damn well we should have gone in, especially when we noticed all the other kids were gone.  We had to write 200 times "I will have enough brains to come in out of the rain."  Once again, good times!

21.  What was the FIRST state you lived in?  Washington

22.  Who was your FIRST roommate?  Handy Man

23.  If you had one wish what would it be?  I want my kids to be happy, truly happy, down to their soul happy.  I hope all their dreams come true.

24.  What is something you would learn if you had the chance?  I don't think this really counts, but I'd like to finish getting my degree.  I guess the answer would be, I'd like to learn more than I know now.
